Gastric Balloon Procedure:
It is a non-surgical procedure where a silicone balloon is placed inside the stomach via an upper endoscopy. The balloon is filled with a sterile liquid to occupy a large portion of the stomach, giving a feeling of fullness.
Procedure Duration:
The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
Who is a suitable candidate for the gastric balloon procedure?
- A patient who is overweight by less than 30 kg from their ideal weight.
- A patient with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 30 who has had several unsuccessful attempts to lose weight.
What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters.
- 18.9 – 24.9 → Ideal weight
- 25 – 29.9 → Overweight
- 30 – 34.9 → Obesity, Grade 1
- 35 – 39.9 → Obesity, Grade 2
- More than 39.9 → Obesity, Grade 3
Risks of the Gastric Balloon:
The gastric balloon is considered an outdated method and has become less effective in treating obesity due to multiple complications and temporary results.
Some risks associated with the gastric balloon include:
- Gastritis
- Potential infection due to bacterial growth in the liquid inside the balloon
- Episodes of cramps, nausea, and vomiting
- The possibility of the balloon suddenly deflating
- The necessity to adhere to a strict diet after placement
