POEM Technique
Procedure: POEM
POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy) is a procedure performed via an endoscope inserted through the mouth. It involves making an incision in the lower esophageal muscle.
POEM is used to treat dysphagia caused by:
- Esophageal Achalasia: A condition that occurs due to damage to the esophageal nerves, resulting in the failure of the lower esophageal muscle to perform its function of transporting food and drink to the stomach during swallowing. This causes food to reflux back into the esophagus and mouth.
- Esophagogastric Junction Outflow Obstruction: A condition resulting from the failure of the muscle between the esophagus and stomach to relax during swallowing, preventing food and drink from moving into the stomach.
Duration of the POEM Procedure:
- From one to three hours.
